The only guess I ever have for such a generic error is to make sure you have a sufficient version of the .NET Framework installed. ACT requires v2.0 or greater. WinXP SP2 only comes with v1.1 by default. But ACT's installer will complain if you try to install without v2.0 or above... so I don't know.

I have been having the same exact problem this last week. I have been running ACT for almost a year now w/o any issues until recently. After trying to run the program and getting the same error message, I checked to see if I had any critical updates.

I have the following update but am not able to install it. It is: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 (KB110806). It will initialize but it will not install it. After a few minutes I get a message that it would not install. End of issue.

I tried uninstalling 2.0 and re-installing it hoping that I would be able to pick up the service pack but no luck. I am running Win XP home edition Ver 2002, SP-2.

I know that there was another thread on this but I didn't see anything that helped the other posts. Any advice would be appreciated if this new listing of not being able to install the service pack helps.

Thanks

I suppose you can uninstall v2.0 and install v3.0 or v3.5 of the .NET Framework.

I tried un-installing ver 2.0 and it would not allow me to remove it using add/ remove programs so I tried just overwriting it with the new 3.5 version.

I got all the way to the installation process and about 2/3 of the way through it stopped saying that it could not install due to issues. Here's the pasted error log info.

[04/14/08,22:21:47] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI returned error code 1603
[04/14/08,22:22:26] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a is not installed.

So I cannot take the program off, it will not update the service pack properly, and now it won't allow me to install the newer version. Who designed this line of torture???

Lol, latest update: finally deleted everything related to ver 2.0 from Windows folder and anything related to 2.0 in registry. Tried reinstalling 2.0 redistributable and I get a maintenance mode window that only allows me the choices of repair or uninstall, even though it is no longer installed anywhee that I can see on my computer.

Also tried installing the ver 3.5 with te same overall results. Not capable as it seeks out 2.0 as being needed.

I finally got the scoop from Microsoft support and am posting it here for anyone else that suffers from the same issue:

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time, let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot it:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

============================================

1. Visit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Save the file on the Desktop.

3. Please double click the "msicuu2.exe" file to install it on the computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework

========================

1. Click "Start" -> "(All) Programs"->"Windows Installer Clean Up".

2. Please locate and remove all .NET Framework software.

After that, please perform the following suggestions to reinstall .NET Framework 2.0 and its updates.

Step 3: Reinstall .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package and its updates

================================================================

Please download and install the following updates in order.

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)

http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/6/7/567758a3-759e-473e-bf8f-52154438565a/dotnetfx.exe

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)

http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/8/c/08c19fa4-4c4f-4ffb-9d6c-150906578c9e/NetFx20SP1_x86.exe

Note: When the "File Download" window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save the file on the Desktop. After downloading all the setup files, please double-click on each one to install them.

Hope that this helps anyone else that is suffering, LOL
